Tony has been a consultant physician since 1992 with clinical training in allergy, respiratory medicine and general medicine. He has been involved in acute general medicine throughout his career with special interests in allergy, difficult asthma, occupational lung disease and interstitial lung disease.

Tony was president of the British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology 2012-15; treasurer 2000-08; council member 1993-present, as well as president of the European Academy of Allergology & Clinical Immunology 2005-07; secretary-general 1998-2005; a member of the executive committee 1995-2009 and ethics committee chair 2016-19. Since 2012 he has been vice-chair of the Joint Committee on Immunology & allergy (RCP & RCPath). Tony was also a member of the MHRA expert advisory group on cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and allergy drugs 2008-12 and chair of quinquennial scientific review panel for the Food Standards Agency.

Tony has been HEKSS training programme director for respiratory medicine 2008-15.

Tony is particularly concerned with the maintenance of expertise and training in acute general medicine among trainee specialists. He is passionate about the development of service for patients with allergic problems and takes a keen interest in increasing dialogue with the general public around appropriate care for older patients, who are not always well served by the acute medical model.
